Headwaters of the Chattoga River

Whitesides Mountain is the focus, The town of Cashiers is at the lower right and Highlands is near the top to the right of center. Creeks around Whitesides may have thumb sized, six sided, transluent white to green beryl crystals. Specific gravity of beryl is fairly light and is close to to that of quartz and feldspars so the gem stones are randomly positioned in coarse basal alluvium and gravel bars, not necessarily at the bottom of the basal alluvium.
